We are deeply saddened by the passing of William J. Rutter, a valued member of the Cellworks Board of Directors from 2013 - 2025 and a towering figure in the biotechnology industry. Bill passed away on July 11, 2025, leaving behind an enduring legacy as one of the founding architects of modern biotech.

As a pivotal force in the San Francisco Bay Area biotech boom, Bill’s contributions to science, innovation, and entrepreneurship transformed how the world develops and delivers life-saving therapies. His work laid the groundwork for recombinant DNA technology and ushered in a new era of therapeutic discovery.

Bill’s impact extended far beyond the laboratory. As a champion of biotech commercialization and academic-industrial collaboration, he helped shape the ecosystem that supports innovation to this day. His decades of leadership, including his guidance on the Cellworks Board, reflected his unwavering belief in the power of science to improve human health.

We at Cellworks are grateful for Bill’s insight, guidance, and support. His legacy continues to inspire our mission and our work. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the countless individuals whose lives were touched by his intellect and humanity.
